Hand/Wrist Pain and Treatment

wrist pain

Wrist painDysfunction of the hands and wrists impacts quality of life immensely. You depend on your hands and wrists to work, play, and perform everyday tasks. As such, conditions that impede them should be treated with gravity.

The human hand is a very delicate and complex structure. It is made up of 27 bones and multiple small, but important joints. The health and use of your hands and wrists depend on the integrity and proper functioning of the many ligaments, tendons, muscles, bones and joints. When all these structures are working properly this allows you to perform the many routine tasks required at home and work. However, if any of these structures is damaged or not functioning properly, the ability to do common tasks can be incredibly difficult and negatively impact your quality of life.

Certain conditions of the hand and wrist, such as carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, gout, etc., may be treated using non-surgical methods. But when those methods are ineffective, sometimes surgery is the best option.

Hand surgery generally encompasses treatment of the entire hand, wrist and forearm as this region works together as a single unit. In order to properly treat a patient’s hand or wrist condition, an orthopedic hand surgeon needs to be intimately familiar with the different structures of the hand and wrist and skilled in their proper treatment. Due to the complexity of treating hand and wrist problems, an additional year of training is required for orthopedic surgeons to obtain certification in hand and wrist surgery.
