Chondromalacia Patella (Runner's Knee)

knee pain

Runner’s knee (chondromalacia patella) is characterized by a dull pain at the front of the knee. It is a condition where the cartilage underneath the kneecap deteriorates.

Runner’s knee is most often treated with rest, ice, and sometimes oral anti-inflammatory medication. Sometimes, physical therapy to stretch and strengthen the iliotibial band, which is the source of the pain, can help improve weakness and reduce pain. Cortisol shots can also help reduce inflammation, when conservative treatments fail.
