St. Mary IM Faculty and Staff
The St. Mary Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Program has more than 30 physicians with outstanding academic qualifications and many years of experience in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Our faculty actively participates in the program’s curriculum and prepare residents to meet future healthcare challenges and continually enhance their skills for life after residency.
Umang Patel, DO, FACOI, is the current program director at St. Mary Medical Center’s Internal Medicine Residency Program. Prior to this, He served as the Associate Program Director and played a vital role in establishing the foundation for the residency. Dr. Patel earned his medical degree at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed his residency at Jefferson Health Northeast. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Internists. He serves in various administrative roles in the residency program which include development of curriculum, clinical education for residents, recruiting, and serving on various Graduate Medical Education Committees. Dr. Patel works closely with residents in daily teaching rounds as an academic hospitalist and he was also recognized as one of the Top 40 Physicians under 40 by Pennsylvania Medical Society. His interests include resident teaching along with the business of medicine. He enjoys stock market analysis, fantasy football and exploring new culinary delicacies.
Arpish Shah, MD, MPH, serves as an Associate Program Director for our Internal Medicine Residency Program. He also is the current clinic director at St. Mary Medical Center’s Internal Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Shah was pivotal in starting the resident’s continuity clinic and developing the outpatient didactics curriculum. Prior to this, He served as core faculty at MedStar Health Internal Medicine Residency in Baltimore, Maryland. He earned his medical degree through the American University of Antigua’s joint program with Kasturba Medical College International Center at Manipal University, in India. He completed his Internal Medicine residency at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. Prior to that, Dr. Shah completed two years of Preliminary General Surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic and Monmouth Medical Center, respectively. Dr. Shah is a strong advocate for disease prevention through education. Dr. Shah works closely with medical students and residents focusing on outpatient education. He has special interests in Global Health and Palliative care. He enjoys movies, travel and photography.
Allison Keenan, DO, is currently a hospitalist and part of Internal Medicine Core Faculty at St. Mary Medical Center. She earned her medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine after which she completed her Internal Medicine Residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia. She brings with her previous experience in private practice, working in a hybrid model of inpatient and outpatient along with seeing patients in long term care setting. She also has experience of being a physician advisor and expertise in utilization management. She sits on peer review committee and patient safety committee at St. Mary Medical Center. She has been part of our Internal Medicine faculty for the past five years. Her interests lie in patient safety, clinical bedside teaching, and simulation lab. She is an avid runner and a biker. She is a huge Philadelphia Flyers fan and is hoping for a Stanley Cup win soon for the city of Philadelphia.
Steve Kutalek, MD, FACC, FHRS, currently serves as the Core Faculty and prior to this has served as the founding program director since the initiation of St. Mary Medical Center’s internal medicine residency program. He has been instrumental in establishing the program and serving on many Graduate Medical Education Committees. Dr. Kutalek earned his medical degree from New York University School of Medicine after which he pursued his Internal Medicine residency, fellowship in cardiovascular disease, and fellowship in cardiac electrophysiology at Hahnemann University Hospital. He is board certified in all specialties mentioned above. Dr. Kutalek has over 40 years of experience in graduate medical education and training residents and fellows. Moreover, he is a well-published author and renowned for his lead extraction techniques throughout the world. He was also named one of the top docs of Philadelphia multiple times throughout his career. He has devoted his career to teaching and continues to encourage and assist residents complete multiple research projects.
Benjamin Solomon, MD, is a Pulmonary and Critical Care Physician at St. Mary Medical Center. He oversees the Critical Care Track for the residents in our program. He earned his medical degree at Drexel University College of Medicine and proceeded to complete his internal medicine residency at Hahnemann University Hospital, and then his fellowship in pulmonology and critical care at Temple University Hospital. He serves as a core faculty for the internal medicine residency, and he has been instrumental in teaching residents critical care medicine. Dr. Solomon is the director of the respiratory therapy team, pulmonary rehab, ICU stepdown unit, and progressive care unit while also being the associate director for the intensivist program at St. Mary Medical Center. He has an innovative style of resident teaching, prioritizes patient care, and is a true advocate for his patients. His hobbies include yoga and sail boating; he is an ICC qualified sailboat captain.
Carlin Mclaughlin, DO FACOI is a practicing hematologist/oncologist at St. Mary Medical Center for over 30 years. He serves as a core faculty and his practice is a part of Penn Medicine. Dr. Mclaughlin earned his medical degree from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine after which he completed his internal medicine residency at Delaware Valley Medical Center followed by a fellowship in Hematology Oncology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He serves on the credentialing committee and is one of the key members in establishing the innovative and advanced Cancer Center at St. Mary Medical Center. Dr. Mclaughlin has been named one of the Top Docs of Philadelphia multiple years in a row. His hobbies include bike riding, spending time on the beach, and making a fashion statement.
Samuel Arcieri MD, MHA is currently a hospitalist and part of Internal Medicine Core Faculty at St. Mary Medical Center. Prior to medical school, Dr. Arcieri earned his Master’s in Health Administration from the University of Scranton. He earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine after which he completed his internal Medicine Residency at Long Island Community Hospital. During his residency he was awarded intern of the year as well as served as chief medical resident. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine. He has worked closely with residents since joining as an academic hospitalist at St Mary’s Medical Center. His interests include hospital evidence-based medicine and resident education. Dr. Arcieri enjoys pick-up basketball, bourbon tasting and spending time with his wife Colleen and daughter Ella.
Diane C. Loftus, GME administrative coordinator, has played an active role at Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic for over eight years. She has served as the executive assistant to the vice president of medical affairs, vice president of mission and community outreach and the director of hospitalist services. With previous administrative experience at Temple University Health System and Central Montgomery Medical Center, Diane shares her expertise in overseeing the day to day operation of the St. Mary Medical Center and Nazareth Hospital residency programs.
