Manzoor RatherLetter from the Program Director

Thank you for interest in our internal medicine residency program. Mercy Catholic Medical Center (MCMC) has a long history of excellence in preparing residents for future careers. With clinical training split between Mercy Fitzgerald, in Darby, Pa., and the Hospital of The University of Pennsylvania’s HUP Cedar campus, in the heart of West Philadelphia, our residents care for patients from diverse ethnicities and cultures.

Our hospitals, ambulatory practices, and emergency departments allow us to treat the rich spectrum of disease in our community, ranging from myocardial infarction to malaria. Mercy’s commitment to medical excellence, which includes certification as a stroke center of excellence and some of the newest CT and MRI scanners in the Philadelphia Metro region allow us to treat most cases ourselves.

Our residency program builds on this clinical excellence to provide an academically rigorous curriculum with a proven success rate. We are continuously modifying our curriculum in response to resident feedback and introduced a new “X+Y” model of scheduling for the 2021-22 academic year. Our residents learn about patient care in diverse clinical environments that span the spectrum of care, including hospital and community-based ambulatory practices, inpatient wards, observation units, intensive care units, skilled nursing facilities and hospice programs.

In each of these areas our residents work side-by-side with skilled, board-certified specialists including geriatricians and intensivists. Learning, in the context of formal teaching rounds, didactic conferences, and informal discussion of patients and their care, is part of the day-to-day rhythm of medical care at MCMC which allows us to achieve an optimal balance of didactic and clinical teaching.

We are fortunate to have a dedicated team of Associate Program Directors, faculty, and hospital administration who work together to furnish residents with the tools to provide excellent quality of patient care. We provide a supportive environment that gives each resident the opportunity to become successful. The program allows each resident flexibility in selecting electives, including one elective outside of MCMC, to support their long-term career goals.

Our residents have successfully obtained fellowships in prestigious subspecialty training programs as well as pursued careers in hospital-based and ambulatory medicine. I encourage you to look through our program highlights on this web page. We look forward to reviewing your application!

Sincerely,
