Symptoms of Breast Cancer

pink ribbon

Most cases of breast cancer have no symptoms at all. For that reason, knowing how your breasts normally look and feel is vitally important. Finding breast cancer as early as possible gives you a better chance of successful treatment. But knowing what to look for does not take the place of having regular mammograms and other screening tests. In fact, the majority of breast cancer cases are found with screening mammograms. Screening tests can help find breast cancer in its early stages, even before any symptoms appear.

Breast cancer may also present as:

  • A new breast lump or mass
  • A mass or swelling in the armpit
  • Swelling of all or part of the breast (even if no distinct lump is felt)
  • Skin irritation or dimpling
  • Breast or nipple pain
  • Changes to the size, shape, or color of the nipple
  • Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin
  • Nipple discharge (other than breast milk)

It is important to report any breast changes to your primary provider without delay.

Although any of these symptoms can be signs of conditions that aren’t breast cancer, if you have them, you should see a health care provider so that s/he can find the cause.
