TAVR
Patients with aortic stenosis have access to advanced and minimally invasive procedures such as transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) at several Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic facilities, performed by skilled and highly experienced interventional cardiologists and heart surgeons. TAVR provides an alternative treatment option for patients who may not be candidates for open-heart valve replacement surgery.
How does TAVR work?
Similar to cardiac catheterizations performed to clear blockages in heart vessels, during the minimally invasive TAVR procedure, your doctor inserts a catheter near the groin into a large artery at the top of the leg and threads it into the heart.
After the catheter is precisely positioned in the heart, a balloon-expandable aortic heart valve is implanted to replace the damaged valve. Once in place, the new valve will function like a healthy valve allowing proper blood flow and improved heart function.
