CRT-D Resynchronization Therapy
About 30 percent of patients with heart failure have an abnormality in the heart's electrical conducting system that causes the two lower chambers of the heart (called ventricles) to beat slightly out of sync. This makes it hard for the heart to pump efficiently. Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT-D) helps coordinate the pumping action of these heart chambers.
How does CRT-D Resynchronization Therapy work?
In cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT-D), your electrophysiologist implants a specialized pacemaker (ICD or implantable cardioverter defibrillator). The CRT-D device simultaneously stimulates the left and right ventricles and restores a coordinated or “synchronous,” squeezing pattern, resulting in a more coordinated and effective heartbeat. The device also can correct potentially life-threatening abnormal heart rhythms by generating an electrical pulse to zap the heart back to a normal rhythm.
