Newtown Square, Pa. – (March 15, 2022) – Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic (THMA) is pleased to announce that its Family Medicine Residency program has received accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s (ACGME) Residency Review Committee. The program’s first class is scheduled to begin July 1.

The new Family Medicine residency program is co-sponsored by THMA’s St. Mary Medical Center in Langhorne, Pa., and Nazareth Hospital in Philadelphia. Residents in the program will complete their training at THMA’s newly constructed Family Medicine Center, located at 3331 Street Road in Bensalem, Pa.

The Family Medicine Center, which will open to patients on May 2, was formed through the combination of three separate THMA practices: St. Mary Adult Health Center, St. Mary Children’s Health Center, and Mother Bachmann Maternity Center. Such a family medicine continuity center is required for Family Medicine residency programs to operate, as students must be empaneled to a patient for the duration of their three-year residency.

“We are thrilled to welcome our first class of family medicine residents later this year,” said David Berdy, MD, CPE, program director of Family Medicine Residency at THMA. “Our innovative and collaborative new teaching program is designed to the meet the growing needs of both patient-centered medical care and resident-centered education in the Philadelphia region for decades to come.”

It is anticipated that over 1,000 new primary care providers will be needed in Pennsylvania by 2030, or 11% of the current workforce, due to an aging, growing and increasingly insured population. The THMA Family Medicine residency program will graduate eight new family medicine physicians each year, beginning with its first class of graduates in 2025. Sixty to 75 percent of family medicine residency graduates end up practicing in the region where they train.
