All new for 2022 is the St. Mary Medical Center/Nazareth Hospital Family Medicine Residency: a collaborative teaching program designed to the meet the needs of both patient-centered medical care and resident centered education in the Philadelphia Metropolitan region. The innovative residency will draw upon opportunities for training at two trusted community hospitals within Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic with a newly constructed Family Medicine Center ideally situated between the two institutions.

At the heart of our program is a mission to serve the needs of underrepresented individuals in healthcare be it in the exam room, on the medical wards, or in the community at large. To that end, the Family Medicine Center’s foundation is being laid in Bensalem, Pennsylvania, a community on the border of the City of Philadelphia. Bensalem calls itself “The Gateway to Bucks County,” given the rich population diversity, it could well be called “The Gateway to America” as over 20 percent of the township population is foreign born with more than a quarter of all households speaking languages other than English. The Family Medicine Center will be the residency hub for community-based continuity care across cultures and generations.

As a Program Director, I often get asked what I am looking for in potential applicants. My response is consistently: intellectual curiosity, entrepreneurial spirit, and purpose driven motivation. I don’t need a resident who knows everything; I need a resident with the desire to learn everything. I don’t need resident who wishes to be led; I need a resident who wants to understand how to lead. I don’t need a resident who views medicine as a series of shifts on call, but rather as a lifelong calling. If you see yourself in that reflection, then we are eager to learn more about you and discuss how the Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic Family Medicine Residency at St. Mary Medical Center and Nazareth Hospital can meet your needs for personal and professional growth.
