Philadelphia, Pa. — (February 29, 2024) — Nazareth Hospital is pleased to announce that it has received the 2024 In Safe Hands Award from The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP), in recognition for an initiative designed to eliminate central line-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSI) through the implementation of a focused team.
To reduce the risk of infection in patients with a central line, or central venous catheter (CVC), Nazareth Hospital implemented a group of specially trained nurses who focus on the use and care of vascular access devices and lines. Called the “Vascular Access Team,” these specialized nurses work in conjunction with physicians, other nurses and infection prevention experts, using evidence-based strategies to guide and manage CVC use and maintenance.
Following the deployment of the Vascular Access Team, Nazareth Hospital achieved zero CLABSI infections throughout the entire hospital for a 14-month span. CLABSI rates remain very low today.
“This award is a testament to Nazareth Hospital’s commitment to providing safe, high-quality care for our patients,” says Michael Magro, DO, president of Nazareth Hospital. “Patients who require a central line to manage their clinical condition are inherently at higher risk for infection. I am proud of the dedicated work that has gone into protecting this particularly vulnerable population within our hospital.”
Nazareth Hospital’s initiative was one of 13 recognized by HAP through its 2024 Achievement Awards. Started in 1978, the program recognizes hospitals and health systems that are taking innovative approaches to strengthening the safety and quality of care, enhancing operations and patients’ experience, and partnering with their communities to address public health needs.
Nazareth Hospital competed against organizations of a similar size for the In Safe Hands Award, which celebrates hospitals’ and health systems’ work to improve patient safety. Entries were scored on specific criteria including results, adaptability and how the goal of advancing health equity was embedded in the initiative. In total, there were 93 entries for this year’s Achievement Awards.
“We are proud to announce the winners of HAP’s 2024 Achievement Awards, showcasing innovative, patient-centered projects that are making a difference in Pennsylvania,” says Nicole Stallings, president and CEO of HAP. “Strong health systems make strong communities, and hospitals are central to our shared mission for a healthy Pennsylvania.”
