Baby smilingLearn why St. Mary is a great place to have a baby

At St. Mary Medical Center, we know that a baby’s birth is an incredibly special and personal moment.

“We never forget that,” says Roman Tatarowicz, MD, chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. Mary.

“Quality care close to home—that’s something that we at St. Mary hold very dear to our hearts,”
– Marie Schickler, Director of Nursing

The doctors and nurses at St. Mary are devoted to a safe and positive birth experience with a personal touch that moms-to-be won’t always find at larger hospitals.

“Quality care close to home—that’s something that we at St. Mary hold very dear to our hearts,” says Marie Schickler, Director of Nursing.

If you’re expecting a little one, here are a few more reasons to trust your care to St. Mary:

Experienced labor and delivery nurses. Our nurses have extensive skills and knowledge in addition to advanced fetal monitoring certification, as well as a passion for maternity care, Schickler says. Plus, they’re great teachers who enjoy answering new-parent questions. “We have fantastic, committed nurses who attend laboring moms in a very personal way,” Dr. Tatarowicz adds.

In-house laborists and midwives. Your doctor or midwife will, of course, deliver your baby. But it’s reassuring to know that a midwife and a board-certified obstetrician are always on duty at St. Mary and will attend to you while your provider is on their way—or in the event of an emergency. This special service adds another layer of safety, quality and care.

Twenty-four-hour epidurals. An anesthesia specialist is always assigned to our labor/delivery unit. We have other options for managing labor pain too. “Our nurses are amazing with nonmedicated deliveries,” Schickler says.

Private and spacious rooms. Each of our labor and delivery suites features a beautiful, peaceful window view. After your baby arrives, you and your support person can room-in with your baby in your cheerfully decorated postpartum room in our secure unit.

Breastfeeding support. If you choose to breastfeed your baby, our lactation experts are here for you. “We make sure you’re comfortable with breastfeeding when you go home,” Schickler says.

CHOP-covered NICU. Babies born prematurely or who require extra care in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) receive lots of TLC from our staff and neonatologists from the world-renowned Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Our live Angel Eye NICU webcam lets you see your baby in real time from home to assure you the best care is being given to your newborn.
