What is Inspire Therapy?

inspire therapyTrinity Health Mid-Atlantic offers Inspire therapy treatments at St. Mary Medical Center. Inspire therapy treats obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by implanting a small device under the skin of the neck and chest. The device monitors your breathing patterns while you sleep and delivers mild stimulation to keep airway muscles open. The system is controlled by a small handheld remote that patients use to turn therapy on when they go to bed and off when they wake up.

How long does surgery take?

The Inspire device is implanted during an outpatient procedure. Most patients return home the same day and resume normal activities within a few days.

What are the key benefits?

  • Inspire helps you sleep without any breathing disruptions. This leads to more quality sleep that leaves you feeling alert and refreshed the next day.
  • The device provides mild stimulation throughout the night to keep your airway open. This provides relief from daytime sleepiness and can also reduce snoring. Inspire reduced snoring and daytime sleepiness in 79% of patients.
  • Quiet sleep for your partner at night.

How do I know if this procedure is right for me?

To be considered a serious candidate for the treatment, you must:

  • Have moderate-to-severe sleep apnea
  • Have either failed or not tolerated CPAP treatment
  • Not have certain diseases or conditions that disqualify you as a candidate
  • Have a body-mass index that indicates you are not morbidly obese
