Long-Term Care
Select Specialty Hospital in Wilmington
At Saint Francis Hospital, we see numerous patients come in and out of our hospital every day. Many of these patients will be discharged the same day they arrive, or within the next two weeks. In order to accommodate the high volume of people who need medical care, hospitals do not usually plan to treat inpatients for extended periods. When a patient does require acute care for more than a few weeks’ time, we refer them to Select Specialty Hospital in Wilmington located on the 5th floor of the Clayton Building at Saint Francis Hospital.
Select Specialty Hospital is a national network of long-term acute care facilities. Their facility is outfitted with equipment designed to treat patients with extended care needs, and, as they only treat patients with long-term needs, they do not need to discharge patients as quickly as a hospital in order to free up space for incoming patients.
What is Long-Term Care?
In many cases, we can continue our patients’ recovery after discharge through outpatient services. Some conditions, however, require close monitoring from medical professionals round-the-clock in order to prevent complications.
Conditions that frequently require long-term acute care include:
- Pulmonary/ventilator weaning
- Wound care
- Heart failure
- Renal failure
- Post-trauma care
- Infectious diseases
