Bone Density DEXA Scan
DEXA Scan (Dual Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry) is a screening tool to evaluate the strength of and mineral density of bones. They are primarily used to diagnose osteopenia (diminished bone density) or osteoporosis (holes forming in bones).
The technology works by measuring the amount of X-rays that are absorbed by the bones in your body. Two X-ray energies allow the machine to differentiate between bone and soft tissue, providing a very accurate estimation of bone density.
Bone density examinations are comfortable, fast and safe. Patients typically spend only minutes reclining fully clothed on the densitometer.
Radiation exposure is very low (equivalent to 1/20th of the dosage received in a normal chest X-ray).
