Robert MonteleoneWilmington, Del. – (June 1, 2022) – Saint Francis Hospital is thrilled to announce that Robert Monteleone, MD, a family medicine physician at Saint Francis Family Medicine and residency director for the Saint Francis Family Medicine Residency Program, has been named Family Physician of the Year by the Delaware Academy of Family Physicians (DAFP). Dr. Monteleone was honored with the award during the annual DAFP meeting on April 23, 2022.

“Dr. Monteleone wholly embodies the well-rounded physician whose actions demonstrate his passion for the profession and care for the community,” said David Hack, MD, chairman of Family Medicine at Saint Francis Hospital. “His compassion and drive make him an excellent role model for young, training physicians, while his military background makes him an effective and efficient administrator. The Family Physician of the Year award could not go to a more deserving individual.”

Dr. Monteleone received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Cincinnati, before earning his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. He completed a residency in Family Medicine at the University of Connecticut in Hartford, Conn., and a fellowship in Rural Family Medicine and Maternity Care with the University of Texas – Galveston at Jasper Memorial Hospital in Jasper, Texas.

As colonel and state surgeon in the Delaware Army National Guard, Dr. Monteleone completed three tours Iraq. He provided frontline care to soldiers at a combat clinic in Kirkuk and medical support on Balad Air Base as well as at Ali Air Base (also known as Imam Ali Air Base and formerly known as Tallil Air Base) in Nasiriyah, Iraq. He has served his country for over three decades and continues to serve as the state surgeon by providing administrative support and medical oversight for approximately 1,500 soldiers. He recently completed a term as the chair of the Army National Guard Medical Advisory Group Executive Committee, which is comprised of representatives for the 54 states and territories, to provide policy and operational guidance to the chief surgeon of the Army National Guard.

As an administrator, Dr. Monteleone serves as the medical director of the Delaware Care Collaborative, a Medicare Shared Savings Accountable Care Organization that provides quality care to seniors. He is also a Board member of the Saint Francis LIFE program, which offers comprehensive, quality care in an outpatient setting. Additionally, Dr. Monteleone sits on the Board of Directors for the Delaware Institute of Medical Education and Research, which provides opportunities to Delaware college students pursuing careers in the medical field.
