Northeast Philadelphia — (January 4, 2021): Nazareth Hospital, part of Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic, has been reaccredited by Corazon, Inc. for its Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) program for emergency heart attack care. Corazon, based in Pittsburgh, is a national accreditor of cardiac specialty programs.

PCI, also known as coronary angioplasty, is a nonsurgical procedure that improves blood flow to the heart through cardiac catheterization. PCI may be used to relieve symptoms of coronary heart disease or to reduce heart damage during or after a heart attack.

Through a rigorous process, the accreditation proves the PCI program at Nazareth Hospital has met or exceeded requirements set by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Requirements for the accreditation include providing 24-hour coverage for PCI emergencies and undergoing detailed quarterly quality reviews.

“Nazareth continues to demonstrate its commitment to providing excellent heart care to Northeast Philadelphia residents,” said Dr. Edward O’Dell, chief medical officer for Nazareth Hospital. “We are proud to be recognized for our efforts, especially during this unusually challenging time."

Corazon offers consulting, recruitment, interim management and IT solutions for the heart, vascular, neuroscience and orthopedic specialties. Corazon has worked with over 500 hospitals nationally to evaluate, re-engineer or implement best-practice PCI programs. Corazon is a longtime champion for PCI with open heart surgery off-site and assisted with the opening of the first PCI program of this type in Pennsylvania.
