Yu Yu TharYu Yu Thar, MD, a medical oncologist at Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic, has dedicated her career to making a meaningful impact on the lives of her cancer patients. Her passion for oncology stems from a personally witnessing challenges faced by many patients in their cancer journey.

“I knew I wanted to help them live longer and improve their quality of life,” she explains. “In oncology, patients and doctors develop real connections and work together as a team to fight cancer.”

Dr. Thar’s commitment to treating cancer patients is fueled by her enthusiasm for ongoing research and technological advancements. She is particularly excited about the potential of new, personalized and targeted therapies, which continue to evolve through private and public partnerships.

“A lot of research and development for drugs and other treatment methods are being created,” Dr. Thar explains. “It’s exciting that these new treatments can be more effective in treating patients.” These advancements give her hope for providing the best-possible care for her patients.

“My favorite thing about working for THMA is the rewarding experience of serving neighboring communities,” Dr. Thar shares. “Patients can receive the care they need in one place because Mercy Fitzgerald has a full-service cancer program.”

She values how the hospital’s mission aligns with her own and has the chance to collaborate with colleagues to make the best decisions for her patients.

  • Favorite book: “My reading time is occupied with reading medical journals and catching up on current events,” Dr. Thar explains. “It’s a great way to stay up-to-date on the latest advancements in medicine and improve my knowledge as a doctor.”
  • Most memorable moment: “A large tree fell on the street while I was driving on a road years ago. It almost fell on my car but missed it by a few feet,” she shares. “That event made me realize how fragile life was and gave me a better appreciation of it.”
  • Favorite vacation spot: Orlando, with its many theme parks and entertainment centers, is one of her favorite places to visit.
  • How she spends her free time: Gardening and doing yoga are some of her favorite ways to recharge and reenergize.

“My patients are very brave, in my opinion,” Dr. Thar shares. “I always encourage them to be strong, positive and hopeful as they go through their treatment and recovery.”
