Osteopathic Requirements
All osteopathic physicians and any allopathic physicians, who choose to participate in the Osteopathic recognition program in the Internal Medicine residency, will be expected to uphold the four Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine as listed below:
Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine
The Tenets of Osteopathic Medicine express the underlying philosophy of osteopathic medicine and were approved by the AOA House of Delegates as policy.
- The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.
- The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.
- Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.
- Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.
Requirements
As part of the Osteopathic Recognition Program, you will be expected to develop competency in the all the milestones consistent with the general training of an internal medicine intern and resident. Additionally, you will be expected to fulfill the following requirements:
- Attend the quarterly Osteopathic Case Conference, which includes review of OMT techniques, osteopathic journal articles, and/or presentations about osteopathic treatments for various conditions.
- Treat patients on the inpatient setting in the ICU with Dr. Pregnar (Intensivist).
- Treat patients on the floors as directed by Dr. Skenderi (Cardiology) and Dr. Chan (Family Medicine).
- Participate in the OMT outpatient clinic with Dr. Chan at the St. Mary Family Medicine Bensalem office.
- Initiate or participate in a QI or OMM project based on osteopathic tenets and principles and practices that will be part of your scholarly activity requirement and include some aspect of osteopathic principles and practices that will be part of your scholarly activity requirement .
Evaluation
- You will be evaluated on your diagnosis, appropriate utilization of OMT and your performance of OMT every six months on a simulation patient.
- You will also be evaluated on your diagnosis, appropriate utilization of OMT, your performance of OMT and your utilization of Osteopathic Principles and Practices when you treat a patient on the floor with one of the osteopathic faculty.
