Joseph “Joe” Scheidly’s cancer journey is one of resilience, gratitude, and unwavering hope. In December 2023, he was diagnosed with prostate and colon cancer. Despite the immense challenges, Joe faces his treatment with a positive attitude and immense strength.

Joe receives chemotherapy under the care of Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic medical oncologist Rajesh “Dr. Raj” Thirumaran, MD, and radiation therapy from Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic radiation oncologist Gregory Stachelek, MD. “When I first met Joe, he always paired a cheerful smile with the determination to keep fighting,” Dr. Raj says.

Cancer treatment is a rapidly evolving field. At Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic, newly diagnosed patients work with a multidisciplinary team to develop a personalized treatment plan that fits their needs. “We treat each patient like family and support them through every step of their cancer journey,” Dr. Raj adds.

The care and compassion Joe has received at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital have made all the difference throughout his journey. True to his nature, Joe shows his gratitude often, most recently by bringing a cake to one of his treatment appointments to celebrate his birthday with his doctors and nurses.

The staff here is incredible. Their compassion is unbelievable, and Dr. Raj guided me every step of the way.” - Joe

Throughout it all, Joe maintains his love for drawing and painting, often sharing his passion with the care team. He insists that their kindness helps him focus on the good things in life, even amidst his pain. “This hospital is a gift from God,” he says. “If it weren’t for them, I may not be here to share my story.”
